Since we are on the subject of cities, did you know that the capital of Vermont is Montpelier pronounced /mɒntˈpiːliər/ (thanks wikipedia!)? I almost burst laughing at the pronunciation by one of my prof who has a Boston - Upper West Side hybrid accent. Can an l make that much of a difference America?...and England?....and Ireland?
